Front Walk
I looked at the diagram from the Wake County site, and the side of the house closest to the driveway is 13 feet wide, and the right side (porch) is 19 feet. Therefore, depending on the full maturity size of the shrubs you like best, will determine the number of shrubs needed for each side of the house. Sorry if that’s not grammatically correct. For instance, if you pick a shrub that will be 3 feet tall by wide at full growth , then we will need more shrubs than a shrub that gets 4 feet tall by wide at full growth. Another option would be to put a taller evergreen at the end of the porch where it wraps the house/anchors it. It would depend on whether you would want to continue to extend the landscape down the side of the house at a later time. The anchor gives a good transition from front to side. Some that gets tall but not too wide, and essentially never needs sheering is the Degroot’s Spire Arborvitae. Another option that does have a little more maintenace is Miss Patricia Holly.
Shrub Options
- Camellia– October Magic Orchid –these will not have a big starting size, maybe 1-1.5′ tall by wide
- Boxwood — I have this link with the different options that do well around here and are readily availble —click here
- Encore Azalea — tons of colors and sizes —click here
- Loropetalum — Purple Diamond
- Gardenia — August Beauty
- Coppertone Distylium
Once we narrow down the options, I wil create some small perennial and grass options to go in between the shrubs to help give it that layered look in that small space. I have a few in mind now, but they are starting to switch out their plants at the nurseries due to the heat, so I don’t want to suggest things that are not available. Plus, the foliage on the plants will also determine the options suggested. Each one above has a different shade of green.
My go to’s have been:
- Blue Marvel Salvia
- Moody Blues Veronica — also has a pink into purple option that is great too
- Variegated Liriope
- Dwarf Little Bunny Fountain Grass or Piglet
- Elijah Blue Fescue
- Dianthus — comes in all shapes and colors
- Stella de Oro Daylily
Side Driveway Area
Once I get a look at the width and depth of the area I will be able to draw up a simple to mimic the photo of the house you sent me. It appears that you will have more space here to create a great visual space. Since I am unaware of the dimensions, I am listing some of the decidous shurbs that you might like that could be included over there. You want evergreen against your house. There are a lot of others I would like to use, but I am scared of the deer eating them.
- Double Play Spirea
- Drift Roses
- Mt Airy Fothergilla
- Golden Soft Touch Holly
- Mojo Pittosporoum
- Spring Bouquet Viburnum
- Radiance Abelia
- Purple Daydream Loropetalum
- Floralberry St. John’s Wort
Hopefully, this will give us some options leading into Friday Morning!
